Confidence Thresholds That Buyers Can Understand
AI confidence should translate into review actions instead of floating as a technical number.
A buyer does not need to know that a model returned 0.78 confidence unless that number changes the next action. Confidence thresholds should translate into clear workflow states: accept extraction, send to review, or request a cleaner document.
Set different thresholds for different fields. A product description may tolerate more ambiguity than a bank beneficiary or legal company name. Critical fields need stricter thresholds and visible source evidence.
Explain the reason for low confidence. Was the image blurred, the field missing, the text handwritten, or the layout unusual? A useful system tells the buyer what to fix.
Do not bury low confidence inside a green status. If a case passes overall but the beneficiary field was uncertain, the payment team should still see the warning.
Review thresholds with analysts. If humans constantly override the same threshold, adjust it or change the document request process.
Working checklist
- Tie confidence to action.
- Use stricter rules for critical fields.
- Explain low-confidence causes.
- Show warnings despite overall clearance.
- Tune thresholds with reviewer feedback.
